Obtaining a Phlebotomy License

In order for you to perform phlebotomy, you have to be certified. A phlebotomist is a medical practitioner that extracts blood from the patients for analysis. There are 3 types of phlebotomy license.

  1. A limited phlebotomy technician is only allowed to do dermal puncture
  2. A licensed phlebotomy technician 1 is allowed to do dermal puncture and vein puncture
  3. A licensed phlebotomy technician 2 is allowed to do dermal puncture, vein puncture and arterial puncture.

How to obtain a phlebotomy license?

To be a licensed phlebotomy technician 1 you have to complete the following:

  • Completed high school, have a high school diploma or GED
  • Completed at least 40 hours of comprehensive training from a reputable or accredited institution
  • Completed at least 40 hours of practical training that covers a minimum of 50 vein punctures and 10 dermal punctures
  • Pass the approved phlebotomy license examination
  • Apply for a certificate and pay for the application charge

A medical practitioner that has an experience of less than 6 months or not more than 1040 hours

He/She must complete the  following requirements:

  • Completed high school, have a high school diploma or GED
  • Completed at least 40 hours of comprehensive training from a certified institution
  • Completed an on the job training that covers a minimum of 50 vein punctures and 10 dermal punctures
  • Pass the approved phlebotomy certification examination
  • Apply for a certificate and pay for the application charge

A medical practitioner that has an experience of more than 6 months or over 1040 hours must complete the following requirements:

  • Completed high school, have a high school diploma or GED
  • Completed at least 20 hours of comprehensive training from a certified institution
  • Completed an on the job training that covers a minimum of 50 vein punctures and 10 dermal punctures
  • Pass the approved phlebotomy license examination
  • Apply for a certificate and pay for the application charge

The phlebotomy license is only good for 2 years. You have to renew your phlebotomy license after 2 years and you must have completed at least 6 hours of continues training within that 2 years to grant the renewal of your license. You can take continues training program on any laboratory, hospital or clinic as long as it is laboratory field services approved. Always remember, you can only work as a phlebotomist if you are already certified.
