Are you thinking of getting into phlebotomy and you would like to know how to go about getting a phlebotomy license? This phlebotomy license is crucial in becoming a recognized phlebotomist even though the only two states that require certification are California and Louisiana. Employers however prefer to hire persons who have training and can work independently so here are a few tips to steer you in the right direction.

Step 1

The first step to getting your phlebotomy license is to search online for a phlebotomy training program that is closest to you that provides both training as well as phlebotomy certification. If you would prefer a more flexible schedule, online courses are available but you will need to make up classroom time when it comes to the practical skills training part of the program. Persons with experience in the field have an advantage of being chosen to do these training courses.

Step 2

Check to make sure that you meet all prerequisites required by the institution as some prerequisites may vary – be 18 years or older, have high school diploma or GED, pass a criminal background check, immunization status up to date, have health insurance or pass a medical fitness examination. However if you don’t have a high school diploma you may be required to take a qualifying examination. Ensure that the course you have signed up for to obtain your phlebotomy license is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency.

This includes theoretical and practical training skills along with the number of hours for each set as well as 100 independent successful venipunctures.

Step 4

Once you have successfully completed training, in order to get your phlebotomy license you would need to sit and pass an examination conducted by an approved certifying organization in your state. Once you have completed this phase successfully you can apply for jobs in blood banks, hospitals, doctor’s offices, physician’s offices and private laboratories.
